A London electrical contractor has been slapped with a fine and given a suspended prison sentence after carrying our dangerous work and fraudulently claiming to be an NICEIC approved contractor.
Earlier this year, in January, David Taylor of DT Property Maintenance and Electrical Contractors was found guilty of leaving homes unfit for human habitation and committing a fraud against his employee. Judges at Isleworth Crown Court sentence him to two jail terms suspended for two years – eight months for trading standards offences and 12 months for fraud charges.
Mr Taylor had left several jobs incomplete and with dangerous wiring, all of which required urgent work to be rectified and made safe – costing residents over £10,000 in putting right the initial unsafe work.
Appearing in court, Mr Taylor pleaded guilty to 12 counts under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, including the unauthorised use of the NICEIC, Trustmark and Part P logo.
Why NICEIC Accredited Electricians Are Important
Even though this contractor displayed the NICEIC symbol, he was not an accredited electrician – thereby making his display of the logo fraudulent. So how can you be sure that a contractor is who they say they are? Luckily, the NICEIC themselves have their own online ‘wall of shame’, which you can see in full here. Using this, you can view a list of contractors fraudulently claiming to be NICEIC approved.
As this case shows, an NICEIC contractor is incredibly important in ensuring quality work, adherence to industry standards and, above all else, safety – the work from the contractor in this case needed to be undone and carried out again.
