Everyday appliances and products that are used on a daily basis must pass Portable Appliance Testing (PAT). But many people are still unaware of the mandatory annual testing that should be carried out. Luckily, we are here to help.
What Is It?
It is a test on electrical appliances to ensure that they are working safely and do not pose a risk to consumers and users. Our testing engineers will often carry out work on-site for both businesses and personal appliances.
Why Is It Important?
PAT will not only test that the efficiency and safety of your appliances, but will also allow the engineer to identify any potential problems that could occur at a later date. It also ensures that products and items comply with safety and manufacturing standards.
What Does It Involve?
The test itself involves a visual inspection of the item where your technician will check the appliance for damage, faulty cable’s and exposed wires. They will also open up the plug, if possible and perform a visual check that wires and fuses are correct and there are no exposed wires.
A PAT Machine is then used to check the efficiency of internal components, current and voltage as well as the Earth wires and insulation.
If your appliances pass the test, it will be recorded appropriately and is rewarded with a green sticker. Faulty equipment must be replaced or repaired as soon as possible.
What Are The Legal Obligations?
There are actually no legal obligations but it the responsibility of the owner to ensure regular PAT test are carried out. It is recommended that tests are carried out once every 12 months and this is strictly enforced in the business world.
